Sink, Swim or Sail: Keeping up with design trends

Are you unabashedly original or do you like to swim with the tide, so to speak? In the design-o-sphere, a trend can go from on-point to passé in a single season. But in real life, it can take much longer before a trend becomes stale, if ever. Some trends will take off and crash land from being too “out there” or impractical while others will wither on the vine from being bland and uninspired.

Paradigm Blindness

In a recent leadership training, I learned about “paradigm blindness” which implies that individuals, groups, and organizations are unwilling or unable to accept any challenge to their core ways of making sense of the world—in essence, their worldviews (or in the case of a company, we could call it a “workview”).

It only takes a spark, to get a fire going…

You know, there is a lot of truth in that old campfire song. A spark, a lit fuse, a push, inspiration… As a self-proclaimed creative person working in a creative field for over (cough, cough) 25+ years, I’ve had my share of blank moments. We all do. When you spend time always trying to propel the thing that normally seems unstoppable, sometimes you need a little help. Here is a short list of things I have done in the past that helps get that little choo-choo out of the creative wheel house.
